DONNY HATHAWAY est né le 1er octobre 1945 à Chicago et décédé le 13 janvier 1979 à New York. C’était un auteur-compositeur-pianiste-interprète de soul. Á ses débuts il travaille avec The Staple Singers, Jerry Butler, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield. Ce n’est qu’en 1969 qu’il commence une carrière de chanteur, enregistrant le titre I Thank You Baby avec June Conquest.
Signant chez le label Atco, l’année suivante, il sort son tout premier album EVERYTHING IS EVERYTHING en 1970, contenant un grand classique : THE GHETTO
C’est dans la bande originale du film Come Back Charleston Blue et dans l’album Live que l’on trouve la chanson.

LITTLE GHETTO BOY, sorte de protest-song, s’interroge sur le sort, l’avenir de ces enfants nés dans ces quartiers mal famés que sont les ghettos. The world is a cruel place, and it ain’t gonna change chante HATHAWAY le déprimé, le pessimiste qu’il était. All of your young life, you’ve seen such a misery and pain, ces paroles ont été de nombreuses fois reprises, samplées.
LALAH, la fille de DONNY, l’a chantée dès 2015, Dr Dre l’a samplée sur son album The Chronic, Snoop, le Wu Tang Clan ont fait de même !
